Interactive Learning Resource Topic: Educating Children on Racism
Hi Learning pod 3, here is my review for your book/interactive learning resource titled ‘Educating Children on Racism”:
Here are some grammar mistakes I found in your introduction slides and lesson portion:
Slide 2: Delete ‘on’; appears twice in this sentence: “The purpose of this book is to inform and educate children in grades K-3 on on what race and ethnicity are, along with what to do when they or someone around them encounters racism.”
Slide 12: Missing an ‘of’: “A of lot kids like to hug their Parents.”
Slide 15: Maybe reword this sentence a bit, so it is easier to understand such as “Ethnicity is another way of saying, people who share the same culture.” The current sentence is a bit wordy and hard to read.
Strengths of ILR:
The ILR is easy to follow, and I can tell who your audience is just from the content. I like that racism is not just pointed out, and there are methods provided to confront the subject.
Weaknesses of ILR:
Other than a few grammar mistakes, I did not see many weaknesses. If you have space, I would briefly describe what culture is as well, since it is mentioned already.
Overall, this is an appropriate learning resource for the K-3 age range. I believe this is interactive enough for the students, and the videos/images that were chosen are appropriate. I would just fine-comb the slides to make sure smaller, and easy to understand words are used in the lesson portion, such as Slide 15 for example.
On slide 16, I see you have race vs ethnicity on there – I think it would be valuable to inform students that not all people of a certain race may have those exact features just because it is common.
It may also be beneficial to lightly insinuate examples of what not to say or point out in other kids; since examples of what to do when they see racism happening are provided as well.
Other than that the images and videos chosen were appealing, and I like that the theme is consistent throughout the book. The subject is clear, and I really like the idea of the book and your mention of how this would provide more flexibility in terms of learning resources for kids. The formative assessments are fun for kids to do, and this would be fun to witness if they were used in a classroom!
